Susan’s Bio

Landscapes, figures, trees and florals, detailed portraits; I enjoy it all.  Having done detailed portraits almost exclusively for years, my art has taken a decidedly “looser” turn.  My pieces are influenced by the wonders and constraints of soft pastel.

I discovered the medium during the dreary days of COVID.  It’s been a race ever since to create!  Abstracted, simplified works of modern artists call to me.  I now find myself frustrated if I’m trying too hard; buying too many supplies; taking too long.  I want to create MORE (feeling, mood, excitement) with LESS (materials, strokes, angst)!

I find a sensible quote from Arthur Ashe actually quite profound. “Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.”  Pay attention. Simplify. Find your “voice” and begin.  These are the guideposts I try to use.

My recent awards include Wassenberg’s 2023 Vera Woodruff Award and BSAG 2021 Best of Show and 2022 First Place.  I am also proud to be accepted by Athena Art Society in 2022.

Hospital and Wellness Centers (CHWC) Artisan Collection currently owns several of my pieces.  Defiance County Public Library owns a painting which they gifted as a print to Fran Dewine.  My work can be found in the home of many individuals.
