Maumee Valley Country Day School (MVCDS) is the only age 3-12th grade accredited, co-educational, nonsectarian, independent school in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Their mission is to cultivate an inclusive community of intellectual excellence where learners creatively explore their passions and boldly inspire positive change in the world. Their 570 students benefit from the 8:1 student-teacher ratio, 51% racial and ethnic diversity, and 20% international population; one hundred percent of their graduates attend college. The school gets its name “Maumee Valley” from the nearby Maumee River which flows through the Toledo metropolitan area, emptying into Lake Erie.
One of MVCD’s points of pride is to develop an appreciation for art through a hands-on approach. The fine arts are intricately woven into the tapestry of the school. They even have their own art gallery, named after Mary Wolfe, a past leader of fine arts in the area. Constructed in 1991, the Wolfe Gallery was designed by world-class architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen and displays the work of Maumee Valley students and professional artists. It is a beautiful, well-lit, open space that showcases 2-D and 3-D artwork to full advantage. Kristin Kowalski, director of the Wolfe Gallery and Fine Arts Chair for the school, juried Athena’s show. She has been an art educator for 11 years, 7 of which have been at MCVDS (grades 8-12).
